Why the Germans negotiate so badly

Dusseldorf Collective bargaining by the unions, night-long discussions by the coalition committee in Berlin, salary negotiations in times of a shortage of skilled workers – good negotiation strategies have rarely been as important as they are now, according to René Schumann, CEO and founder of the Negotiation Advisory Group.

In the Handelsblatt Disrupt podcast, he talks to editor-in-chief Sebastian Matthes about why Germany lacks a culture of negotiation and which strategies help debates to be successful. Schumann gives concrete tips for a successful salary negotiation – from the point of view of companies and employees – and explains why negotiators should refrain from arguing.

The conversation goes far beyond individual negotiation tips: Schumann assesses Annalena Baerbock’s criticism of China during her visit to Beijing and explains why the night-long negotiations of the coalition committee are, from a negotiating perspective, according to Schumann, “great nonsense”.
