new York A police officer rearranges warning cones in Manhattan’s gloomy Port Authority bus terminal as a red bus approaches. He heads for a separate bus platform a few meters away from travelers going from here to the airport or other cities.
“Operated by Transportes Latinos” is written on the bus. About two dozen people get out, most of them young men. They have nothing with them except the clothes they wear. At the entrance, volunteers from aid organizations greet people and distribute water and masks.
For months, buses carrying asylum seekers, mostly from Central and South America, have been arriving in Port Authority every day. Many of these are Abbott buses, named after Greg Abbott. The Republican governor of Texas wants to set a political example.
