Why many German tenants have to stay for the time being

Frankfurt Owning a house with a garden – according to opinion polls, that is still the ideal for many Germans. But for more and more interested parties, this utopia is over. According to a study by the real estate financing broker Engel & Völkers Finance, which was previously available to the Handelsblatt, almost two-thirds of Germans no longer feel able to finance a property without the help of an inheritance or a gift.

An important reason is the lack of equity, according to the survey commissioned by the company, for which more than 1,500 people were surveyed nationwide in March. 53 percent of those surveyed stated that financing would fail at this hurdle.

The rising construction costs and interest rates mean that buying a condominium is a long way off, even for middle-class families. In addition to the higher interest discounts, the increased energy prices make the monthly costs even more expensive.
