Berlin Many employees dream of a four-day week. If you only take working hours as a benchmark, then it is already a reality for 28 percent of employees in Germany. Because they work a maximum of 32 hours per week, i.e. mathematically no more than four working days of eight hours each.

At 44 percent, the proportion for women is significantly higher than for men, at just 12 percent. This is shown in an interactive graphic by the German Economic Institute (IW). It clearly illustrates how long dependent employees work in this country – differentiated according to characteristics such as gender, education or earnings.

It is based on data from the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), an annual survey of around 30,000 people. The graphic only refers to dependent employees aged 15 to 64, the self-employed, trainees or the unemployed are not included, nor are people who are not employed.
