Who is the teacher of the teachers, historian Halil İnalcık?

Halil İbrahim İnalcık, with his full name, was born on September 7, 1916, in Istanbul, to a family of immigrants from Crimea. When his family moved to Ankara at a young age, he received his primary education at Ankara Gazi School and after his high school education at Balıkesir Necati Bey Teacher’s School, Ankara University Faculty of Language, History and Geography. He completed his higher education in the Department of New Age History. He graduated in 1940 and remained at the school as an assistant.

He submitted his doctoral dissertation titled Tanzimat and the Bulgarian Question in 1942. His associate professorship thesis was titled “The Ottoman Empire and the Crimean Khanate from Vienna to the Great Ricat”. While he was teaching at the same faculty, he was elected a member of the Turkish Historical Society in 1947. In 1949, he worked on Turkish manuscripts at the British Museum. His professorship thesis is titled Ottoman-Crimean Khanate Cooperation in the Years of Vienna Disruption.

He lectured as visiting professor at universities such as Columbia, Princeton, Pennsylvania, Harvard, In 1972, he founded the Department of Ottoman History at the University of Chicago, In 1993, he founded the Department of History at Bilkent University. He was awarded the Hungarian Order of Merit by the President of Hungary in 2003.

Selected as one of the few 2000 scientists in the world by the Cambridge International Center for Biography Halil İnalcık spoke Turkish, Ottoman Turkish, English, French, German, Arabic, Persian and Italian. Halil İnalcık, who is known as Şeyh-ûl Müverrihin, that is, Şeyh-ûl Müverrihin, the Şeyh of the Historians, the Pole of the Historians, the Teacher of the Hodjas, due to his studies and the numerous students he has trained; He passed away on July 25, 2016 at the age of 99.
