Berlin The highly contagious Omikron variant is driving the number of infections in Germany from record to record. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported 80,430 new cases on Wednesday, more than ever. The number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week rose to 407.5, compared with 387.9 the day before. In many places the value is already approaching the 1000 mark. The virus is spreading rapidly, especially in large cities such as Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen.
The “wall”, which experts predicted for the course of the fifth wave, is building up a little late, but with full force in Germany as well. However, there is one difference to the previous infection occurrence: If the country had long since gone into lockdown in the past in view of such numbers, it is still far from it in the current situation.
