Berlin By the time the Omikron variant appeared in November at the latest, it should have become clear to everyone: Sars-Cov-2 will no longer go away. The changeable virus and the associated waves of infections, Covid-19 diseases and deaths will continue to affect humanity.
“It will be very difficult, at least in the foreseeable future and maybe even forever, to really eliminate this highly contagious virus.” That said the virologist and US government advisor Anthony Fauci in October, before the discovery of the Omicron variant in South Africa.
As depressing as the realization is that Corona – similar to influenza – will become “endemic”, i.e. will remain a constantly recurring threat, it can be so helpful to finally accept that there is no way “back before Corona”, but to think about it must become what the “endemic state” actually means. And which measures are necessary and when to contain the virus to such an extent that it is halfway bearable for a society.
