Polygon Network, suffered outage from 20.50 CEST on 10 March until about 07.00 on 11 March. Fortunately, all users’ funds are reported to be safe.
Yesterday, Polygon (MATIC) developers notified users of a potential network downtime – the Heimdall node – due to a planned network upgrade.
Heimdall application is used by one of the two layers of the network’s proof-of-stake chain. The team confirmed the outage on March 10 at 17.50 CEST.
Emphasis was placed on the fact that no users were compromised during the outage.
While the exact cause of the outage is unknown, it is speculated that it may have been caused by an earlier upgrade from Ethereum to the Polygon PoS state synchronization/bridging module, which consisted of a minot parameterization fix.
The development team is speculating that there may be an error in the upgrade. On the other hand, experts confirmed that Heimdall does not process user transactions but is used for validator-related bridging and transactions.
Temporary Fix
At around 04:00 on March 11, Polygon successfully released a fix restoring transactions on its network. The following statement was made from Polygon’s official Twitter account:
Thank you for your support during this time and we have an update: We have deployed a temporary fix to unblock the Bor chain and continue generating blocks on the Polygon chain. While this solution is temporary, the team is working to implement a longer term upgrade to fix the Heimdall issue. However, the bridge of the network will not be active until the final solution is released.
🔼 UPDATE
Polygon PoS has resumed operation as the team has deployed a temporary hotfix to address the issue.
All user funds are safe.
We’re working on a long-term solution and will continue to update the official forum and other channels.https://t.co/IaQZ6j9AWX https://t.co/dNjHDXSzKL
