Kia has taken the expected step in the electric conversion for Sportage, one of its popular SUV vehicles. The company will integrate the Plug-in hybrid engine into its 2023 model car. Hybrid-powered Kia Sportage will be on the road by the end of the year

We saw this new hybrid engine designed by Kia at the Auto Show held in Los Angeles last year. The version introduced here combined a 1.6-liter turbocharged internal combustion engine with a 44 kW electric motor powered by a compact 1.49 kWh li-ion battery.

However, this final version, which has undergone many improvements, is a little different from the first one we saw. Here, it uses a 177 horsepower 1.6-liter turbo petrol engine combined with a 66.9 kW electric motor. The battery comes in a 13.8 kWh li-poly pack. This entire system integrates with the 6-speed AWD automatic transmission.

The biggest advantage of the car will be its electric range of up to 50 kilometers. Kia says it will take about 2 hours for the 7.2 kW onboard charger to fully charge its battery over the 240V connection. Also, according to the company’s claim, the best regenerative braking system we can find on the market will be used in this vehicle. So every time we hit the brakes, the batteries will be charged.

The plug-in hybrid-powered Kia Sportage will go on sale in the US in two trim packages. These will be called X-Line PHEV AWD and X-Line Prestige PHEV AWD. Both will feature satin chrome trim materials, gloss black (piano black) side mirrors, roof rack, tinted windows, 19-inch gloss black alloy wheels and LED taillights.

Inside, a panoramic curved screen combining two 12.3-inch panels will be available as an option. While Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, the 360-degree camera system with 3D images will also be subject to an additional fee. The portage X-Line Prestige PHEV AWD features Harman Pardon premium sound system, while both hardware can be integrated with Kia Connect with smartphone remote, WiFi hotspot with 4G LTE, stolen vehicle tracking and immobilization, and AI-assisted predictive mapping.

LED headlights, lane keeping and lane keeping assist are standard. Systems such as front collision avoidance with cyclist detection, rear passenger warning, rear parking sensors, blind spot collision avoidance, rear traffic collision avoidance assist and safe exit will also be offered internally.

The Prestige package includes Highway Driving Assistant and navigation-based smart cruise control as standard. In addition, there will be many systems such as lane centering and keeping the distance from the vehicle in front. There is also a remote smart parking aid system that allows the car to enter and exit a point using the buttons on the key fob.
