Bremen’s best missed the last cup penalty |
Bittencourt: “I screwed it up”
Ironically, Bremen’s best botched the last penalty kick in the penalty shoot-out and thus became unlucky Cup Out in Paderborn.
Leo Bittencourt (28) was involved in both Werder goals after his substitution (64th) when the score was 0: 2 and also took responsibility for the big showdown. But his penalty fended off Paderborn’s Zingerle. Tachie scored and Werder was knocked out 6:7…
“Someone has to miss for a team to win,” says Bittencourt. “I screwed it up. I can only apologize to the team.”
There were no allegations. On the contrary: Teammates and coaches know that without Bittencourt (who scored to make it 1-2) they would have been kicked out after 90 minutes.
Ilia Gruev: Hats off to how he came in and helped us. He scores the goal straight away, pushes the team and takes the fans with him.” Ole Werner: “He played a big part in the fact that we got to the penalty shoot-out in the first place. That can happen, I don’t blame anyone.”
Bittencourt seems experienced enough to be able to forget the disappointment quickly. Werder’s offensive man: “I’ll shake that off and carry on. I’m extremely sorry, but unfortunately I can’t change it.”
