The US Treasury Department Takes Action!
According to information obtained by Bloomberg, the US Department of the Treasury, crypto- miners and stakers digital asset plans to free its brokers from rules that would require them to turn over information about their clients’ transactions to the IRS.
The ministry’s view, allegedly sent to a group of senators today, said it was “not intended to compel reporting requirements by parties who cannot access information useful to the IRS.”
This statement from the department states that software and hardware providers, as well as those who use mining or staking to verify crypto transactions, can avoid obligations to the IRS.
Narrowing the definition of broker here would remove many of the industry’s concerns about the law.
It took a lot of effort to change
Several senators, including Senators Mark Warner and Rob Portman, have pushed through the legislature to change the broker provision. A change seemed imminent when they reached a last-minute deal with the Biden administration, but the efforts ultimately failed.
The Treasury still has other issues to consider, including the extent to which parties in the digital asset market, such as centralized exchanges and often decentralized exchanges and peer-to-peer exchanges, should be treated as brokers, said Jonathan Davidson, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Legislative Affairs.
