G7 foreign ministers condemn Russia’s nuclear rhetoric

The foreign ministers of the seven major western industrialized countries (G7) have sharply condemned Russia’s nuclear rhetoric. “Russia’s irresponsible nuclear rhetoric and its threat to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus are unacceptable,” the ministers said Tuesday at the end of their three-day meeting in Karuizawa, Japan.

“Any use of chemical, biological or nuclear weapons by Russia would have serious consequences,” the final statement said. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced last month that Russia would station nuclear weapons in Belarus.

The foreign ministers also called again on China to act as a responsible member of the international community. Peace and security are paramount in the Taiwan Straits. They spoke out against Beijing militarizing the South China Sea.
