“These are serious national security issues that go beyond the fact that millions of dollars were stolen in a single incident we saw with DeFi attacks and vulnerabilities,” Eun Young Choi, director of the National Crypto Enforcement Team (NCET), said in a statement.

Working with other government agencies, both in the US and abroad, from time to time, NCET has helped snatch over $3.8 billion in stolen cryptocurrencies this year.

“In the early days, there were Darknet markets and people were buying and selling all kinds of contraband,” Choi explained. “Nowadays, we see crypto emerging in every type of criminal activity that the department is investigating,” he said.

While Choi acknowledges that cases involving crypto may be different in nature, NCET is investigating cases involving digital assets in the same way that the Department of Justice pursues criminal activity related to stocks, commodities and other assets.

However, Choi acknowledged that his team will play an important role in mitigating the high-grade crypto attacks that plague the industry.
