Washington In the search for a submersible with five occupants near the famous “Titanic” wreck, emergency services have come across a “debris field”. The US Coast Guard said on Twitter on Thursday that a remote-controlled underwater vehicle had discovered the debris in the search area near the “Titanic”.

Experts are now evaluating the information. It was initially unclear whether it was debris from the missing submersible “Titan”. The Coast Guard has announced a press conference on the finds. This should take place this Thursday at 3 p.m. local time (9 p.m. German time).

An expert in ship salvage is certain that the debris field discovered in the search for the “Titan” is from the missing submersible. In talks with the BBC and Sky News broadcasters on Thursday, David Mearns referred to statements made by the President of the Explorers Club in a WhatsApp group.

Explorers are united in the association, and two “Titan” inmates are also members. Mearns said the so-called landing frame and the rear cover of the submersible can be seen. There was initially no independent confirmation of this.

The submersible has been missing since Sunday morning (local time). The “Titan” was with five people on board on the way to the wreck of the “Titanic” that sank in 1912 at a depth of around 3800 meters.

About an hour and 45 minutes after the start of the dive, contact with the mothership was lost. According to the operator Oceangate Expeditions, the 6.70 meter long “Titan” had enough oxygen on board to supply five people for 96 hours – according to estimates by the search parties, this time window should now have closed.
