Beijing In the tense relationship between China and the USA, even the weather takes on a symbolic meaning. Under a clear blue sky, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said goodbye on Sunday after a two-day visit to Beijing.
When they arrived, shortly after a heavy downpour, a rainbow had stretched across the sky. Premier Li Qiang, who received Yellen on Saturday, said he was confident he would “see more rainbows after we’ve been through the wind and rain.”
Alongside Li, Yellen met China’s top economic adviser He Lifeng and Pan Gongsheng, who is being tipped to be the future governor of the central bank. At her final press conference on Sunday, Yellen described her visit as a “step forward” in trying to put US-China relations on “a firm footing.” However, she acknowledged that there were “significant differences”.
