Turkish Ph.D. Cryptocurrency Shock: Lost All His Money!

Doctor Nursen Mutlu sold his house in Istanbul and invested in crypto money to meet his father’s medical needs. The reason he lost all his money was a text message on his phone.

The doctor who clicked the link on his phone lost all his money

Doctor Nursen Mutlu, living in Istanbul, sold her house to cover her father’s treatment expenses. In November, Dr. Nursen Mutlu’s father had a cerebral hemorrhage. Happy sold her house to pay for her health care. However, additional cash was required to cover the costs. He then invested in a well-known cryptocurrency exchange in Turkey to increase the value of his money. He lost every penny he had on the stock market because of a text message on his phone.

Mutlu said that the incoming message states that 15% of the current stock market investments will be given:

I think it’s a scam because the link is not opening and I suspect. My password has been changed.

Mutlu says that after a few minutes, a 0850 number called. Customer service representatives on the other end of the line identified themselves. The scammers had meticulously planned every step. When they called, they assured that they would recover the doctor’s account. They forced Mutlu to take some actions. According to Mutlu, they asked her to send money to the wallet included in her customer service support email. The 43-year-old doctor did all of these procedures. Then called customer service. At that moment, the truth emerged. The callers said, “We didn’t call you, this is not our number.” All Doctor Nursen Mutlu wants right now is to get his stolen money back.

Avoiding cryptocurrency scams

Scammers impersonate various companies under the guise of customer service. These scam phone numbers are spammed on the internet, preying on unsuspecting victims seeking help. Scammers can also make calls that go directly to potential victims. These scammers are skilled at social engineering and make false claims to deceive and manipulate their targets to provide personal information that will be used for fraudulent purposes.

What should I pay attention to in order not to be fooled by scammers?

  • Never give support personnel (or anyone else for that matter) remote access to your machine. This gives the scammer full access to your computer, online financial accounts and digital life.
  • Never give out your 2FA (2-Factor Authentication) security codes or passwords. Exchange staff will never ask you to share sensitive authentication information.
  • Never accept outgoing calls asking for your confidential personal information. Be aware that scammers can spoof real phone numbers when making outgoing calls.
