Istanbul Turkey wants to negotiate a gas discount with Russia. According to government circles in the Turkish capital Ankara, Turkey wants to pay around a quarter less for gas imported from Russia.

The Bloomberg news agency writes that the meeting on this topic will take place this Friday. According to this, the Turkish government also wants to obtain a retrospective discount for gas imports that have already been paid for this autumn.

The chances are good. First, cheap energy would be a good cure for the country’s flagging economy. Second, the Kremlin, for its part, has an interest in the Erdogan government not falling prematurely.

The government in Ankara is struggling with the economic consequences of the Ukraine war and with a relaxed economic policy that President Erdogan wants. Inflation is at 84 percent and the central bank needs to support the lira.
