Berlin In 2014, few Ukrainians realized that Russia’s attack on the Donbass and annexation of Crimea could only be the prelude to a protracted war. Most believed these hostilities would last two to three months. And because at that time the Ukrainian army was unprepared and practically unarmed, the Russian forces managed to advance without difficulty.

A lot has changed in the eight years since. Although Ukraine did not expect a large-scale invasion by the Russians in February 2022, the armed forces were prepared for it, unlike at the time. Now, half a year later, they started a counter-offensive. How can this be explained?
