Concept of the “New Class” from BMW at the IAA

The new electric vehicles show how digitalization and electromobility are changing the automotive industry – and with it jobs.

Berlin The IAA Mobility in Munich has long wanted to be more than just a car show. This is shown by the announcements made by German manufacturers at the trade fair in Munich. BMW not only presented the next generation of electric cars with the electric “Neue Klasse”, but also announced a partnership with the Amazon subsidiary AWS. Mercedes also unveiled a concept car with the new CLA and also announced a major order for chip specialist Qualcomm.

New drives as well as powerful hardware and software are becoming increasingly more important for manufacturers than the classic combustion engine. With digitalization and electromobility, the demands placed on employees are also changing. “We expect major shifts in the automotive industry in terms of the roles and skills required,” says Julian Kirchherr, human resources expert at the management consultancy McKinsey.
