These foreign units support Ukraine in the war

Berlin Shortly after Russia’s war of aggression began last year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on foreign nationals with combat experience to help defend the country. The newly created International Legion was modeled on various units – made up of members of post-Soviet countries – which had been fighting alongside Ukraine against the separatists in Donbass since 2014.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kiev, more than 30,000 foreign volunteers are fighting for Ukraine (as of September 2022). The International Legion includes representatives from more than fifty countries on all continents. Above all, Americans and Britons would have joined the unit. They are followed by Poles, Canadians and citizens of the Baltic States – but also by Brazilians, South Koreans and Australians.
