This project will play an important role in the country’s major transformation, accelerating its transition to sustainable energy.

But as things stand now, India still relies mostly on fossil fuels, especially coal. These fuels provide more than 70 percent of the country’s electricity. Renewable energy currently covers only 10 percent of India’s electricity needs.

The country also ranks third in global greenhouse gas emissions, behind China and the United States. It is hoped that this massive project will increase India’s environmental commitment to these challenges and make the national energy portfolio more sustainable.
