The West can save itself the raised index finger

India buys Russian oil, India buys Russian coal, India buys Russian weapons: Moscow can rely on New Delhi as a customer – and it also gets diplomatic support from the world’s largest democracy: In bodies such as the UN Security Council, India persistently refuses to to condemn the Russian attack on Ukraine.

Europe and America are disappointed and outraged by India’s attitude. Also because, in contrast to China, the other big friend of the Kremlin, the country has been seen as like-minded in geopolitics.

With a marathon of visits, the West is now trying to somehow win India over to its side: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was in India at the end of the week. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen followed on Sunday. And Chancellor Olaf Scholz is likely to try to influence his counterpart when India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi travels to Berlin in early May.
