Dusseldorf It was an unusual WhatsApp message that reached Telekom managers in South America a few days ago: “I need your help for an important transaction,” read a voice message in English with a German accent. The employees knew the voice, it was that of one of the German board members. The profile picture also showed the boss. But something was wrong.

The employees sent the message to Thomas Tschersich, head of security at Telekom. It quickly became clear to him: the recording is fake – a deepfake audio. “There was too much background noise and the pronunciation of the sentences was very strange,” says the security chief. Tschersich forwarded the fraud attempt to the police.
