The shortage of trainees keeps the economy in a stranglehold

Trainee shortage

Employers must train more again – venture capitalists should be role models: Those who hire a lot can find real top employees, although not every trainee will meet the expectations.

The problem is homegrown. For too long, business and politics have not bothered to educate as many young people as possible.

Yes, fewer come from schools and yes, more go to university. Yes, it was difficult for a medium-sized company to hire trainees in the Corona years 2020/21 if you didn’t know whether the company would survive. And yes, there are young people who try the patience of even well-meaning trainers badly.

Nevertheless: The enormous creativity that many companies are currently developing in order to curb gas and energy consumption would also be sorely needed in training.

Because it doesn’t help at all. Germany has to train the ones we have. But in 2021 alone, 230,000 school leavers ended up in the “transition system” instead of starting an apprenticeship right away. And today there are 2.3 million unskilled laborers between the ages of 20 and 34.

In the meantime, not even every fifth company offers apprenticeships.

Employers’ attitudes towards migrants and women need to change

There are migrants who, despite having good qualifications, cannot find an apprenticeship. Young women are still not taken on in many companies because the boss doesn’t feel like installing a women’s toilet or teaching the workforce to respect women.

For far too long, employers have written off far too many young people as “not ready for training”. Anyone who hires them anyway, organizes tutoring in math if necessary or organizes an apartment far from home, will find that it can be worthwhile.

The attitude can no longer be: My trainee should be an organic German with the best possible degree and not make any spelling mistakes. Venture capitalists who invest in many start-ups and take into account that some of them do not meet expectations must be role models.

However, it is doubtful whether all this will be enough. The Minister of Labor must therefore redeem the “training guarantee” promised in the coalition agreement as quickly as possible. Together with companies and unions.

Or how much longer do we want to see how the shortage of skilled workers becomes the strangling angel of the German economy?
