Düsseldorf, Moscow, Paris Military incidents are becoming more and more frequent in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donbass – and they make a Russian invasion increasingly likely. On Sunday, Ukrainian soldiers and Russian-backed separatists came under artillery fire along the so-called line of contact. The most intense fighting since the beginning of the current crisis is said to have claimed several lives.

Moscow and Minsk then decided to continue their troop maneuvers, which actually ended on Sunday. Any minor provocation could lead to irreparable consequences, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the Interfax news agency.

The US fears that Russia could fuel the conflict in eastern Ukraine to create the pretext for an invasion. Russia has massed more about 150,000 soldiers on the border with Ukraine. The leadership in Moscow denies attack plans.

With demonstrative unity, the NATO states demanded a sign of de-escalation from Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Munich Security Conference at the weekend.
