Competition in the electric vehicle market is increasing. BMW, which wants to offer drivers a longer range, announced its new batteries. BMW, which has managed to reduce the cost of battery cell production, will save money thanks to the new generation battery technology.
Toyota recently announced that it has decided to invest $5.6 billion in electric vehicle batteries. Similarly, companies such as Tesla and Mercedes-Benz are known to work on battery technologies.
BMW will offer longer range with new generation battery technology
The developed battery technology will be used in electric vehicles to be launched in 2025. BMW has announced that it will combine technology with the next-generation Neue Klasse electric vehicle architecture.
Prismatic batteries used in existing cars will be replaced with battery cells produced in 46mm diameter and two different heights. Making a statement about the production technique, the company stated that it uses more nickel and less cobalt for the cathode. However, it is known that additional silicon is used in the anode part of the batteries.
BMW has previously said that it aims to reduce the cost of batteries by 30 percent in order to increase competition with Tesla. The company was able to reduce the carbon footprint resulting from the battery manufacturing process by 60 percent compared to the production of existing battery cells.
Next-generation electric BMW models will have up to 30 percent longer range. However, thanks to the developed battery technology, there will be a 30 percent increase in charging speed.
