Dusseldorf, Vienna With a wide range of plug-in hybrids, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and BMW wanted to bridge the gap between combustion engines and electric drives. But business in Germany has stalled since the federal government canceled subsidies for partially electric cars at the beginning of the year.

Sales of plug-in hybrids in the Far East have increased almost six-fold to 1.3 million vehicles since 2020. However, Volkswagen sales remained at 36,000 units, the VW subsidiary Audi halved its sales and BMW lost 39 percent.

Only Mercedes-Benz and Porsche can report small increases. This is shown by figures from the data service provider MarkLines, which specializes in the automotive industry, and which are available to the Handelsblatt.
