san francisco The M1 Abrams is a monster of a machine. The main battle tank weighs 54 tons, and with its 1500 hp it can dig through almost any terrain. However, this has its price. Even with normal road use, the M1 consumes 5.7 liters of diesel – for a distance of 1.6 kilometers. That’s more than 350 liters per 100 kilometers.

Tank consumption is not only a problem for the US Army. The pictures from the Ukraine illustrate the urgency: Entire colonies of Russian vehicles and tanks were left stranded due to a lack of supplies. “Getting fuel to troops in combat zones is definitely one of the most dangerous jobs,” said Nina French, chief engineer at the Department of Defense’s Defense Innovation Unit (DIU).
