London, Brussels Shortly after London and Brussels settled their dispute over Northern Ireland on Monday, the dispute over the interpretation of the pact began. The so-called “Windsor Framework”, classified by both sides as historic, is intended to supplement the Northern Ireland Protocol negotiated in 2020.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke of a “decisive breakthrough” and praised the new agreement as a prerequisite for regaining sovereign “control of Northern Ireland”. In particular, the so-called “Stormont brake”, named after the regional parliament of the same name in Belfast, is “an incredibly powerful means” to block future EU law in Northern Ireland if necessary. On the EU side, on the other hand, sober words were chosen: it was just a matter of pragmatic adjustments to the existing Northern Ireland Protocol, it said.
