The Gulf States and their Proximity to Russia

Berlin For decades, the Arab Gulf States were close allies of the USA and at the same time the most important suppliers of the raw material that is so important for the US economy: oil. Ex-US President Donald Trump upgraded Saudi Arabia in particular immediately after taking office by making his first trip abroad to the country and completing billion-dollar arms deals. He also brought the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain to reconciliation with Israel.

In April 2020, because of the corona pandemic, the oil price for deliveries to the USA had fallen into negative territory for the first time, Trump allowed the Riyadh-led oil cartel Opec, together with Russia, to allow oil prices to rise again by severe cuts in production. The close relationship between Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman continued after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi embassy in Istanbul. The situation is different with Trump’s successor Joe Biden.
