Dusseldorf When the Freshfields law firm was searched in late summer 2015, it was something special. The public prosecutor’s office in Frankfurt found a suspicious number of documents from Freshfields on cum-ex transactions during a raid on the Maple Bank less than ten minutes’ walk away.
Research by the Handelsblatt now shows the full extent of Freshfields’ cum-ex activities. Accordingly, the law firm has advised far more customers on questionable cum-ex deals than previously known. An internal list of clients shows that the law firm worked for around 25 banks, investors and traders who wanted to do cum-ex deals. Almost all of them now have to answer questions from German tax investigators and public prosecutors.
