Berlin In 2022, the federal government wants to borrow more than 400 billion euros from investors for the third year in a row. 410 billion euros are to be flushed into the coffers of Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) through the auctions of federal securities, as the finance agency in charge of debt management announced on Thursday. Billions more could be raised through papers that are not auctioned off, but rather placed with the help of banks using four syndicate procedures. The volume has not yet been determined.

Because of the high corona costs, the federal government borrowed the record amount of around 483 billion euros on the financial market in the year ending. That is around a fifth more than in the old record year 2020, when a good 406 billion euros were raised. In the coming year, the finance agency will have to borrow so much money mainly because old debts amounting to 322 billion euros have to be repaid.
