Dusseldorf Jan Marsalek remained true to himself. On June 19, 2020, the former board member of Wirecard AG went into hiding, and his picture has been emblazoned on Interpol wanted posters for a year and a half. But even if the investigators could not find him, it is evidently clear where the fun-loving Marsalek is hiding: in the middle of Europe’s most expensive region.

It is less than ten kilometers from the posh Moscow suburb of Razdory to the Novo Ogaryovo estate, Vladimir Putin’s magnificent building. Whenever the Russian President rushed towards the Kremlin with his motorcade on a road specially blocked for him, he and Marsalek were separated by a few hundred meters as the crow flies.
