Transportation is expensive. Guest authors Joseph Delatte and Georgina Wright call for the EU to produce more hydrogen.

The EU needs more decarbonised hydrogen in order to achieve the net-zero target for climate protection by 2050 – everyone in Brussels agrees on that. However, the member states do not agree on the question of where the industrial gas should come from.

The EU has less renewable energy capacity than other continents, so it would have to either import zero-carbon hydrogen from abroad or resort to other forms of electricity, notably nuclear, to produce it.

The European Commission wants hydrogen produced in Europe to be stored to deal with supply disruptions. The rest of their strategy focuses on imports to be used to decarbonize EU industry.
