Brussels, Dusseldorf When modernizing its IT, the European Central Bank (ECB) wants to move some of the applications to the cloud – the organization also relies on the services of large American service providers such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft and Google, known in the industry as hyperscalers. But it is precisely this strategy that is causing political controversy in Europe. The discussion about the ECB shows the dilemma of the European economy: It is dependent on services whose level of data protection is disputed.

“If you want top-fit ​​IT, the infrastructure must be top-fit,” explained Claudia Plattner, ECB Director General for Information Technology, on Monday at the Handelsblatt conference “Future IT” the cloud strategy. The ECB is pursuing a multi-cloud strategy, using the services of several companies. One cannot do without the American corporations because the most efficient providers come from the USA.
