You imagine you are in the resistance. In many German cities, “lateral thinkers” take to the streets to demonstrate against vaccinations and corona rules. Some do not shy away from violence – like this week in Bautzen, where ten police officers were injured by throwing bottles and firecrackers during a demonstration.

Many “lateral thinkers” believe that the Federal Republic of Germany is degenerating into a “corona dictatorship” and that the protection against infection is being used for the creeping abolition of democracy. Of course that’s not true. The courts continue to work independently in the pandemic, the Bundestag controls the government, and the rule of law functions.

In order to be able to assess what a dictatorship really looks like, the “lateral thinkers” could take a look abroad. Many governments have used the year 2021 to expand their power beyond their own people. Mostly it was regimes that appeared autocratic before the pandemic. Now they have gone even further.
