Dusseldorf The US publisher Best Lawyers has identified the best lawyers and commercial law firms in Germany for the year 2023 exclusively for the Handelsblatt. The current edition in the Handelsblatt is based on the 15th edition of the Best Lawyers Rating.
In the process, business lawyers are asked which competitors they can particularly recommend. The selection process is based on the conviction that lawyers themselves are best able to judge which colleagues are particularly qualified for certain areas of law. Lawyers can be nominated by anyone except themselves.
This results in comprehensive overviews of the “Law Firms of the Year 2023” and the “Best Lawyers of the Year 2023”. Lawyers with a currently outstanding position in the market can be found among the “Lawyers of the Year 2023”.
Five law firms with double awards
For several years, the Handelsblatt for Germany has also been presenting younger lawyers who are particularly noticeable in the market in the “Ones To Watch” (formerly “Anwälte der Zukunft”) column. As a rule, they have been working in the practice for three to eight years and have already acquired an exceptional reputation among competitors and clients. They are attested to have the best future prospects.
In the Law Firms of the Year category in Germany, five law firms managed to win awards in two specialist areas. Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer won in the categories of mergers and acquisitions and arbitration/dispute resolution/mediation, competitor Gleiss Lutz in antitrust and competition law and public law.

Hengeler Mueller triumphed in corporate and capital markets law and Flick Gocke Schaumburg in her specialist areas of tax law and succession planning/foundations. Also awarded twice: Osborne Clarke in IT and data protection law, two areas of law that have recently been in particularly high demand.
