Tesla’s numbers are not a good sign for the German premium manufacturers

The number is also a declaration of war against the German car manufacturers: Tesla wants to deliver over 1.5 million vehicles in 2022. “Tesla’s main focus this year is on increasing production,” said Elon Musk on Wednesday evening when presenting the quarterly figures. That would put the Americans on an equal footing with Audi, even if Audi were to sell a few tens of thousands more vehicles this year.

And Tesla is growing extremely fast. The delivery figures are still not based on demand – the Americans could sell significantly more than they can currently produce. A luxury problem that the German competitors do not know.

Especially since Elon Musk is getting closer and closer to his production goals. The new factories in Brandenburg and Austin will soon start up. They should work even more efficiently and faster than the existing plants in California and China.

The 2021 already set new records. According to Bloomberg calculations, Tesla produced 8,550 vehicles per week in Fremont, more than any other of the 70 auto plants in the United States. After all, BMW ended up third in Spartanburg with 8,343 vehicles.

Tesla will continue to increase production by 50 percent annually as planned. In 2023, the US manufacturer should then leave Audi far behind and catch up with Mercedes.

Gigafactory in Grünheide benefits

These successes are particularly amazing when you look at Tesla’s narrow product range. The entry-level Model 3 is already five years old, the SUV Model Y three years. Nevertheless, they are in such high demand that Tesla had to postpone the introduction of the new Cybertruck model.

There are many reasons for the strong and constant demand: the increasing quality of Tesla’s production, smooth software applications in the vehicles and disruptive technologies such as wireless updates.

For German manufacturers such as Audi and Mercedes, the growing competition from California on the verge of the transition to e-mobility is not a good sign. The dark visions behind the warnings from VW boss Herbert Diess could come true.

After all, German production sites benefit: The factory in Grünheide near Berlin is designed for 500,000 vehicles and can be expanded. The plans for this have not only been in Elon Musk’s drawer for a long time – he will also get them out soon.
