Rising energy prices are a burden for tenants in Germany when it comes to annual billing.

Cologne Shortly before the turn of the year, there was probably another unpleasant surprise for many tenants – the utility bill for 2021. And that was probably expensive: on average, energy costs rose by almost 43 percent between July 2021 and July 2022, according to a statistical survey federal office.

It is all the more worth checking the costs for water, electricity and heating, but also for garbage disposal, caretaker and garden maintenance. “Every second statement is incorrect,” says Rolf Bosse, Managing Director of the tenants’ association in Hamburg. On average, tenants who turn to his tenants’ association would pay between 80 and 100 euros too much.

If you want to take a close look at your utility bills, you should pay attention to the details. “Formal errors are the quickest to spot,” says Bosse.
