Telegram banned for forgetting to check their email
It has been known that Telegram has been under scrutiny by Brazilian authorities for some time. Finally, the Brazilian Supreme Court announced that it banned the popular application. The founder and CEO of the application, Pavel Durov, made the first statement on the subject.
Durov says he wants Brazil to send the future takedown request to a dedicated email address. But he says he thinks the court didn’t get the e-mail because he disobeyed this request and continued to send the e-mails to the company’s old general purpose address, so he didn’t see the incoming e-mails.
Of course, after the 2nd checks for the moment, company managers say that they have reached the relevant e-mails and are trying to compromise with the court. But the statement made by the Brazilian Supreme Court is quite clear. Telegram did not respond to our requests. That’s why it’s banned in Brazil.
Telegram CEO Durov shared the following statement publicly:
It seems we have an issue with outgoing emails between our telegram.org corporate addresses and the Brazilian Supreme Court. As a result of this miscommunication, the court decided to ban Telegram (in Brazil) for not responding. On behalf of our team, I apologize to the Brazilian Supreme Court for our negligence. We could definitely do a better job.
In late February, we complied with another earlier court order. We also responded with a recommendation to send future takedown requests to a dedicated email address. Sorry, our answer must have been lost. Because the court used our old general purpose email address in subsequent attempts to reach us. As a result, we missed their decision in early March, which included a follow-up takedown request. Luckily, we found it now and did the right thing. Today we submitted another report to the Court.
As tens of millions of Brazilians rely on Telegram to communicate with their family, friends and colleagues, I ask the Court to consider postponing its decision for a few days at its discretion to allow us to rectify the situation by appointing a representative in Brazil. This will have an impact on our quicker response to future pressing issues.

However, I am confident that once a reliable communication channel is established, we can efficiently control takedown requests for public channels that are illegal in Brazil.
