Fukushima A severe earthquake struck off northeastern Japan late Wednesday evening (local time). The broadcaster NHK initially gave the strength as 7.3. According to the Japanese meteorological authority, the quake occurred at a depth of 60 kilometers under the sea.

Fukushima is particularly affected. Japan’s meteorological agency issued a tsunami warning for Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures.

Whether there is damage in the nuclear ruins in Fukushima is not yet known. Nothing was initially said about possible injuries. The region is part of the northern Japan area devastated by a deadly magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami in 2011, which also triggered a nuclear disaster.

The strong and long-lasting earthquake was also felt in Tokyo. According to a reporter from the Reuters news agency, the power went out in parts of the capital.
