Polygon (MATIC) to Bring ZK Technology to its Mainnet
Polygon co-founder Mihailo Bjelic explained his research work to CoinDesk in an interview and underlined how important ZK technology has become for the project’s development roadmap.
Some ZK-based enhancements could also be made on the main proof-of-stake (POS) chain of Polygon, an Ethereum sidechain, as a way to improve transaction security, Bjelic said.
Researching how ZK technology can be integrated into MATIC’s main chain, the company is investing heavily in how this scaling technique can drive its ecosystem.
“One of the things we’re trying to do is to make the Polygon POS chain ZK-safe so that we incorporate zkEVM into the Polygon POS chain itself,” Bjelic said in an interview.
This development is partly noteworthy because in recent years Polygon has been able to attract large corporate partners with its fast and inexpensive transactions and marketing skills. Meta announced on Instagram in May that it would support Polygon-based non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
ZK rollups are a type of scaling solution that processes transactions faster on layer 2 of a blockchain, then moves the transaction data back to the mainnet blockchain, for example in this case Ethereum, which has been plagued with occasional congestion and high fee rates in recent years.
ZK rollups use “proofs” to show that a transaction is valid, by sharing only a small amount of information about that transaction.
Bjelic said in his statement:
“The POS chain will continue to exist and operate as it does today. Polygon zkEVM will be a separate network.
Each application will be able to decide which level of security, scalability and transaction fees it prefers and basically choose the network accordingly.”
