Second Nuclear Power Plant in Turkey to be Established in Sinop

Alparslan Bayraktar, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, made important statements about the nuclear power plant and other energy projects. The minister also shared the location where the second nuclear power plant will be built.

officially a “nuclear power plant” with the introduction of nuclear fuel on April 27, 2023. Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant Then, new power plant projects started to become clear. Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar made statements about a second and possible power plant.

According to the statements shared by Fevzi Çakır from Habertürk Turkey’s second nuclear power plant will be built in Sinop. On the other hand, the Minister stated that we must have a nuclear power plant in the Thrace region as well.

Descriptions of the second nuclear power plant and Thrace:

“The story in nuclear continues, let’s say the second power plant or location, it will be Sinop. But just as important is our We must have a nuclear power plant in Thrace. In the meantime, apart from conventional, large-scale nuclear power plants like the ones planned in Akkuyu or the ones planned in Sinop, Thrace, we are working closely with the UK and America on a new technology called small modular reactor, where production in Turkey has the opportunity to become more localized. In fact, we have been working since 2019, but this period will be something that can be activated a little more intensively.”

The installed power in Turkey will be over 20 thousand megawatts in the 2050s:

“When Turkey comes to the 2050s, it will have a nuclear installed power of over 20 thousand megawatts. So almost 4 Akkuyu size. Some of them may be large-scale power plants, as I said, but some of them are small modular reactors, which are very important for the transformation of our industry in energy.

We are planning and thinking that this technology will be very intensively related to both its production and installation in Turkey towards the 2030s. Therefore, such an area is obviously important for us, beyond the large nuclear power plants that we have negotiated with only with Russia, South Korea and China.”

Negotiations are made with three countries for nuclear power plants:

“By the way, let me tell you this about both the second power plant and Thrace: with Russia, South Korea and China Our talks are currently ongoing. Of course, the intergovernmental agreement, the agreements going to the Parliament, so the things that go there and get approved from there, then the permit processes and constructions will start, I hope.

We are working with France in Akkuyu, we get very serious support from France regarding third party independent auditing. There are criticisms that Akkuyu was left to the Russians. There are many different stakeholders out there, different auditing bodies, so nuclear is never an area left on its own.”

There are projects worth 200 billion dollars in total in the energy field:

“In the next period, regardless of the field, a very important issue related to localization will be on our agenda and agenda, related to renewable field, battery, battery technologies, equipment used in oil and natural gas exploration, and other equipment used in electricity generation.

In this regard, we aim to meet the investment appetite with the arrangements we will make and the vision we will set forth. in the upcoming period project oriented work We aim to continue more intensively. What I mean is this: In addition to the need for management related to the seconds that I just mentioned, it is necessary to focus on long-term work.

Therefore, we have a project set and portfolio in front of us. The legal infrastructure will be prepared for some of them, some of which will start and some of which will start and end in this period, which appears to be the one that we need to start and complete by 2035. Our projects of approximately 200 billion dollars there is.

Among these projects, we have renewable, nuclear, natural gas-oil exploration, natural gas-oil and electricity infrastructure projects, interconnection projects. Therefore, we are preparing for the next period with a project set of 200 billion dollars.”
