Berlin The exclusion of Russian banks from the international payment information system Swift is becoming more likely. The federal government, which had long rejected this sanction, is now prepared to do so under certain conditions. As early as the evening, there could be an agreement at a planned video conference between US President Joe Biden and European heads of government.

In addition to Biden, French President Emmanuel Marcon, Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Draghi, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) are also expected to attend the switch. After a possible agreement, all EU states would then have to decide on the sanction together.

According to information from the Handelsblatt, Scholz had been negotiating a compromise with his counterparts from government circles all Saturday. Banks worldwide use Swift to process their payments among themselves.
