Has she noticed an increase in prices? “Oh, almost every day,” she replies with a shrug. She always buys the same things for the family. But the sums on the receipt “get bigger every time”. Like the woman in San Francisco, there are millions of people in the United States who are amazed at higher prices in supermarkets, gas stations, rents, heating costs and car dealerships. The consumer price index recently climbed by more than six percent and thus faster than it has been in 31 years. At the same time, delivery bottlenecks mean empty shelves, high material costs are a burden on the manufacturing industry.
