Brussels Rishi Sunak knows Downing Street well. In February 2020 he took up residence as Chancellor of the Exchequer at number 11 – right next to the British Prime Minister’s seat at number 10. He owed his promotion to none other than Boris Johnson. At the time, the prime minister hoped that the young, ambitious Sunak would be easier to manage than his predecessor, Sajid Javid.

But Johnson soon learned that behind the obliging appearance of the former Goldman Sachs banker was a nefarious power politician. That side was shown again two weeks ago, when Sunak ushered in Johnson’s ouster by abruptly resigning as Treasury Secretary. His sponsor has not forgiven him for the fact that the former pupil is now reaching for the highest office himself. Johnson and his henchmen work behind the scenes to keep the suspected traitor off Downing Street.
