Apple, one of the world’s largest technology companies, has been in trouble in the Netherlands for allegedly behaving illegally in the application downloaded from its own store. The Dutch competition regulator Consumers and Markets Authority (ACM), which investigated the case, imposed a large fine on the company.

ACM fines Apple 5 million euros per week
Apple has been caught on ACM’s radar for its behavior in the App Store in its plan to allow dating apps to use in-app purchases methods. The Dutch agency has given Apple a fix-it-wrong warning because it doesn’t allow it to use third-party payment methods. He was fined 5 million euros per week until he fulfilled it properly. If the fine is not corrected, it will be limited to 50 million euros.
Actually, this incident between Apple and ACM is not new. He had been faced with the same issue before, Apple said that he would try to fix the error. In the last period, Apple did not bring the obligations requested by the board. Upon this, ACM took action and included the following statements in its statement.
Apple should set the terms of access to the Dutch App Store for dating app providers. In the App Store, dating app providers should also be able to use payment systems other than Apple’s payment system. Additionally, dating app providers should have the ability to refer to payment systems outside of the app. This was stated in an order subject to periodic penalty payments that ACM placed on Apple in August 2021. On December 24, 2021, the court ruled that this part of the judgment could be published.
After these developments, it is a matter of curiosity what kind of policy Apple will follow. The company has not yet received a response on this matter. However, they had previously stated that they would object to the ACM’s threats of sanctions. The reason is that the company thinks these orders are not in the interest of users. Last year, South Korea passed a law preventing major platform developers from using their in-app payment systems. Apple, on the other hand, stated a few months ago that it would comply with this law.
