Cevdet Caner is rarely at a loss for pithy words. His reaction to the police officers who stood outside his apartment in Monaco on Wednesday was nevertheless unusual. The Austrian real estate entrepreneur told the Financial Times that he was “absolutely relaxed”. Now he finally knows what he is being accused of. Seen in this way, said Caner, he was even “happy”.

The 49-year-old likes to describe himself as a “deal maker”, as a consultant in the background – often for handsome fees. He also played this role at Adler Real Estate AG, which was at the center of the Europe-wide raid on Wednesday, in which 175 investigators took part.

The Frankfurt Public Prosecutor’s Office is leading the investigation into the Adler Group. She suspects Caner, his wife, his brother-in-law and four other suspects of infidelity, accounting fraud and market manipulation, or aiding and abetting. The media lawyer for the Caner family denies the allegations. Caner’s brother-in-law is also convinced that “all allegations will be invalidated”.
