Boiron also clarified that Polygon Labs is not interested in the development of Layer 3 networks. While he acknowledged the importance of Layer 2 solutions in the Ethereum network, he disagreed with the idea that Layer 2 is not equal to the value of Ethereum. He illustrated the potential risk that if all Layer 3 networks depended on a single Layer 2 solution, Ethereum’s value would decrease and its economic sustainability could be compromised.
From Boiron’s perspective, he noted that if Ethereum stops generating fees and has no expectation of generating fees beyond a single Layer 2 solution, the value of ETH will decline. This scenario could undermine validators’ trust in ETH and lead to validators withdrawing from securing the network, resulting in a decrease in the security of the network.
Peter Haymond, one of the community members responsible for creating scaling solutions for Ethereum, argued that Layer 3s come with a number of advantages and do not necessarily take away their value from Ethereum.

Boiron emphasized the importance of the low cost of the local bridging method and drew attention to the benefits of Layer 2 solutions. However, while acknowledging its advantages, he noted that relying on other bridging methods could incur economic and safety costs. These methods may result in delays in the use of capital or additional payments for accelerated use of capital.
He also questioned the benefits of low challenge or cost of proof, suggesting that the evidence-gathering process may not provide these benefits. Similarly, Boiron dismissed the concept of private gas tokens as a real benefit, pointing to the availability of L2s in the Polygon CDK.
Finally, he noted that other potential benefits also apply to Layer 2s, as noted previously, and so they are not really specific to Layer 2s.
