Campfire is described as a social network created entirely for augmented reality. Niantic interprets its new app as “the “home page” of the real-world Metaverse. Campfire was first introduced in Ingress, the company’s first AR game. Starting this summer, it will come active in other games of the company.

Pokemon Go campfire dialog

Until now, Pokemon Go players had to use other platforms to communicate. They view the social networks of Nintendo and The Pokémon Company negatively. That’s why Niantic had to ignore the option to include the social media app directly in the game. As a result, the company has fixed this issue by releasing a separate app that can connect to all of the game’s experiences.

Alongside Campfire, Niantic introduced Lightship VPS (virtual positioning system), a new platform that will allow developers to more accurately learn the location and direction of users. Niantic claims that with this system, users will achieve “centimeter-level” precision.

In this way, developers will be provided with important information on better localization and continuity, which are the most important factors in the AR experience. To power the VPS, the company has produced 3D maps of more than 30,000 locations in six cities (San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, London and Tokyo) based on short video contributions from players.

The Pokemon Go game seems to develop further in the future. How important do you think it is to communicate with other players in Pokemon Go? You can share your views with us in the comments section.
